M5 Avonmouth Bridge, Lighting Column Assessment for LED Upgrade

End Client: National Highways South West Region

OBJECTIVES

Carry out a structural assessment of existing flanged octagonal lighting columns on the M5 Avonmouth Bridge for the installation of new LED luminaires.

WORK CARRIED OUT

Desktop survey and structural assessment calculations of the lighting columns.

CHALLENGES

These ageing columns were to be reused for new LED luminaires. The columns were flange-mounted beyond the parapet barrier. The location is highly exposed, situated on both coastal terrain and a bridge deck, 30m above the River Avon’s water surface.

RESULTS

Calculations were prepared allowing for both the coastal location and the elevated mounting position.

The dimensions of the columns were surveyed on-site by the contractor, including the different door reinforcement types, to assess the strength of the reinforced door opening.

Stuart Griffin, MWay Comms commented

“Many thanks for all of your assistance in making this massive improvement to the street lighting over the bridge possible”.
